ABOUT US

Origin – Late 1800s

Janet Cook Johnstone first made the toffee in the late 19th century. It was originally prepared by hand in 7-lb (3-kilo) batches. The shop originally opened at 2 Holm Street, Moffat under the name ‘Mrs Blacklock’s’ (Janet’s married name).

World War II

The shop thrived and just before World War II broke out, the founder's daughter, Elizabeth, moved the shop to Moffat High Street. The shop remained in this location for 40 years. Following Elizabeth, the business was passed down to her son Matthew.

Fourth Generation

Matthew passed the reigns to his son Blair Blacklock. Blair began making toffee in 1959 and ran the operation for over 60 years, well into his 80s. Under Blair’s tenure the shop even hosted a café in the rear of the shop. The time came to move once more and the shop moved to its current location on Moffat High Street and the production of Moffat Toffee moved to a factory just off the High Street so production could be ramped up!

Today

The current day-to-day operations were subsequently passed on to Sean Walker (Blair’s right-hand man, who has significantly expanded the sweet lineup while maintaining the original recipe. The high street shop currently has a range of over 1000 lines of confectionery, shortbread, biscuits, preserves and alcohol. Amongst this vast range is over 100 homemade lines ranging from Fudge, Tablet, hard boiled sweets and other traditional confectionery… made the old fashioned way!
